On Friday 18th January, 2019 we hosted Guest Speaker, economist Fausto Spotorno visiting from the consulting firm O. Ferreres & Asociados in Buenos Aires to discuss the current economic perspectives in Argentina and Latin America. Discussion was chaired by Professor Tim Samples, UGA.

Economist Spotorno explained the performance of the main economies in Latin America and the expectations for 2019. In particular, he addressed the impact of the increase in interest rates and the changes in the flows of investments, what to expect from Brazil and the past and future challenges that faces Argentina.

Professor Tim Samples guided the discussion inquiring about the structural challenges and reforms required to improve the economic performance of Argentina in the mid-term.

Fausto Spotorno is a senior advisor to several multinational companies and investment funds. He is Research Director and Chief Economist for the firm Orlando Ferreres & Asoc. Was Professor of Argentine Economy and Policy at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires (UCA) and currently is Professor at UCEMA. He has worked as Chief Economist for Delphos Investment and is a regular publisher in major newspapers and key speaker in specialized TV and radio shows.

Tim Samples is a professor of legal studies at the Terry College of Business. His research focuses on legal issues affecting international investment, particularly in the areas of sovereign finance and energy. Much of his work deals with Argentina’s experience with sovereign debt and investor-state disputes. Samples received a 2017-18 Core Fulbright grant to conduct research and teach in Argentina, where he taught courses on sovereign debt at the Facultad de Derecho (School of Law) at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Most recently, Samples was lead author of an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court for a case involving Argentina and YPF. Samples has been quoted by media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, La Nación, Diario BAE, Barron’s, Bloomberg, Los Angeles Times, and BBC Mundo, and has also appeared on CNN en Español, BBC World Service, and National Public Radio.
